A Weekend in Charleston and Sullivan Island

My husband and I are self-proclaimed foodies. Honestly, my motto is “don’t eat it if it doesn’t taste good.” Why waste the calories right? Well, no calories were wasted on this visit.  Here’s a breakdown of everything we saw, did and ate during our weekend trip.

We live in North Florida so Charleston is a quick four-hour drive from our home. We decided to make the trip right before I started my new job since I had a few days to spare. We arrived around noon and headed straight to 167 Raw for lunch. OMG! The food was amazing. The place is super small but certainly worth a visit. The restaurant itself is on a busy street with minimal parking but we were able to find street parking easily in the surrounding neighborhood. The neighborhood was filled with quintessential downtown Charleston homes. Lots of charm on every block.


Next, we headed to the Dewberry to check-in. We lucked out with this five-star hotel using Priceline’s Name Your Price Tool. The Dewberry is a recently renovated and repurposed mid-century modern hotel. It’s also the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building. It’s conveniently located next to the Charleston Farmer’s Market in Marion Square. We spent a few hours at the market on Saturday morning. I must say, it is hands down the best market we’ve been to. It had a great mixture of artisans, food vendors, crafts and even fresh pressed juice.


After a bit of sightseeing and a quick visit to Rainbow Row and The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, we decided to check out a few of the local breweries and tap houses. Here’s a breakdown of our stops.

We had some amazing meals during our trip. One of our favorites was Circa 1886 Restaurant connected to Wentworth Mansion. We saw antelope on the menu and had to try it. It was surprisingly delicious.  Fried quail and beef tenderloin rounded out our meal.




Our next dinner stop was the famous Halls Chophouse. The food was absolutely amazing however the service was even better. Not only was the service up to par with what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant, the owner makes it a point to welcome and say goodbye to every guest that visits the restaurant. We headed out of the restaurant after a wonderful experience to be completely blown away when the owner chased us down for a block and a half just to shake our hands and thank us for coming in. Wow is all I can say.



Our last adventure on this weekend trip was a short drive out to Sullivan Island. It was a cute beachside town with one little stretch of restaurants and shops. We ventured out to the beach to take in the island’s natural beauty before heading to Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ. Home Team has a perfect mix of beach vibe and sports bar which makes the atmosphere a blast.




Bottom Line:

Charleston is a great way to spend a weekend. You can cover the highpoints in just a few days mixing relaxation and amazing food and drinks. Keep in mind the city gets quite hot in the summer. Visit in the fall if you can. No matter when you go, you’re destined to have a good time.
